(debbie) Y.J. Lin 林晏如 is an interdisciplinary artist interested in site-specific work focused on the architecture of human sound and languages. In a bilingual Mandarin and English household, she began classical piano at age four and grew up watching her grandma design and knit entire outfits from scratch.
Having performed as a vocalist at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl, and Carnegie Hall, she experiments with the duality of performative and reflective, time-based works, often using a hybrid of sound, found, upcycled, video and emerging to transcribe the transience of thought through the lens of Faith and technology. Her works address the many faces of reconciliation and have been exhibited in Barcelona, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, New York, Rome, Seoul, Taipei. She graduated cum laude from UCLA with a B.A in Music Education, summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music with a M.M in Music Production and Technology and received her M.A. in Media Studies from The New School of Public Engagement in New York. She is the founder and co-curator of V I D E O S O U N D A R C H I V E, actor in her debut lead role in the arthouse film, Winter in LA and a self-taught photographer, tennis and coffee enthusiast just like her grandpa. As an advocate for equitable creative expressions, she is happy to be a member of SAG-AFTRA, UBCP/ACTRA and League of Canadian Poets to keep fair artist compensation in all the conversations and spends most of her time creating and working to restructure the historically and systemically erased voices as a video sound installation artist, screen/voice actor and director.
