Q as in Quiet is a soft protest to the long history of irresponsible portrayal of womxn in TV, media and beyond. It momentarily reclaims the medium for those who have been “quietly doing the work” -- taking care of these spaces for the community to survive and each other to safely thrive. The sound is working against the video image, mainly the protagonist in this piece, raging, fighting to survive and combat the tireless embedded sexism that permeates. We travel through the dissonance and urgency to only land in a strange acquiescence that seemingly suggests perhaps this battle has been lost — voices have been erased and we return to the oppression of conformity and how we are expected to behave. But upon further perusal, is that really what has transpired or are we witnessing the collective sparks reverberating around the world, where the quiet and strong persist and walk on?

R&D speaks to the reconciliation of self as we face historical erasure, misappropriation, objectification, misrepresentation, and devastatingly exponential hatred and violence. As a “womxn of color” mostly working within marginalized parameters and navigating embedded structures of discrimination, it is my lifelong mission to cultivate an environment most conducive to equitable creative expressions — to push past
